June 2007

From the Pastor’s Desk:

When it comes to supply and demand, we do things backward here at Salem.  Participation in church

activity tends to drop off some in the summer as we take vacations, travel, and spend time in the outdoors.  Recognizing this reality, we adjust our schedules by cutting back on activities such as Sunday school, quilting, confirmation, board and committee meetings, etc.

But when it comes to worship, we do just the opposite.  During the time when worship attendance tends to be lowest, we increase our number of services from one to two.  Sunday tends to be more formal; midweek more relaxed.

The reason Salem for this odd behavior is to create flexibility in our worship opportunities.  Summer weekends are often an opportunity to get away from home, yet our need to stay connected to God through worship does not disappear.  By having a midweek service we offer people a chance to take advantage of weekend opportunities while keeping their faith life and their church strong through the summer months.  Also, we have some members whose life situations make it difficult for them to attend regularly on Sunday mornings.  The summer schedule gives them a chance to reconnect with the worship life of the church,

This summer we are moving the midweek service from Wednesday to Monday, at 7 p.m.  Reasons for doing this:

·        By being closer to the weekend, it reminds people that the midweek service is not a separate worship service, but is an opportunity for those not in town over the weekend to catch up on what they missed.

·        It helps the pastor and others who have a leading role in worship to focus on one service at a time, rather then carrying over one service while preparing for the next.

·        It helps people to stay on schedule.  Many members were never clear on whether the Wednesday service was a continuation of the previous Sunday or a preview of the coming Sunday.

At the end of the summer, we will reevaluate whether this schedule is helping us accomplish our

mission.  In the meantime, I invite you to enjoy the benefits of a flexible schedule that allows you to stay connected in worship while enjoying what summer in SW Iowa has to offer.

Tuesday Quilters:

In addition to the 103 quilts we took to Greenfield, 19 quilts and 2 blankets were sent to Clarinda to be delivered to Lutheran World Relief.  From May 1, 2006 to May 1, 2007, a total of 336 quilts have been sent.  Twenty-eight quilts have been given locally.   Ten baby quilts were given to Broadlawns Birthing Center, donated by Lucile Lundy. This is possible through all of us pulling (tying) together.  Hats off to everyone who has been involved in any way.

The quilt which was auctioned off for Lakeside Camp @ East Okoboji brought in $110.00.

Two quilts are being taken to Riverside Camp @ Story City for their auction in August.

We’ve adjourned for the summer and will resume September 4th in the fall.

Christian Education Committee

May 1, 2007

Those in attendance were Bert Henry, Joan Lienemann, Jodi Hitz, Linda Aaseng, Raquel Linch and Pastor Nate.

Confirmation went well.

The ladies are working on the quilts for the graduating seniors.  Willard Peterson is covering the cost of the quilts.

Discussion on the Augsburg curriculum entitled AKALOO.  Before the next meeting everyone should try to look at the website so a discussion can be made.  Sunday school attendance has been low for the kids and this might be a way to try to get it back up.

Randy and Joni Cook will take over the Junior High LYO in the fall.  Jodi and Andy Hitz are considering being leaders for the Senior High LYO.

Kid Squad ended on May 9th.  Bert suggested dividing up the kids into two age groups.  Some discussion, while great, isn’t appropriate for the young kids.  Other things mentioned in the discussion was mentioning prayer concerns to the group and service projects.

The cost for individuals to go to camp is $350.  The goal is to give $250 per child from the church to help cover the costs.  With the number of kids going the goal is to have $1000.  The kids have been working at the concession stand at the high school and have raised some of the money for the camper ships.

Pastor mentioned he would like to see members from Salem attend the National Convention.  The next one is in 2009 in New Orleans for sophomores, juniors and seniors.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 5th at 4pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Raquel Linch
