From the Pastor’s Desk:
Most people dislike rewriting. That’s true whether we are talking about youngsters working on a school assignment or professionals working on a book. We would rather do it, get it done, and then get on with the next thing. No sense going over the same thing.
But unless you are a genius, it is virtually impossible to get things right the first time. I have come to discover rewriting is where some really good things happen.
Mistakes get corrected.
Sloppiness gets cleaned up.
Vague thoughts crystallize.
The trite and the dull get spruced up.
New ideas show up that are far better than what came before.
Rewriting is where you turn the serviceable, the adequate, and the routine into a work of art, into something that you can be proud of. Ideas are where masterpieces are born; rewriting is where they are grow to maturity.
What does this have to do with Salem? Well, there are many things happening at Salem. I am thankful for each of them and for the time and effort put into make them work. But the rewriter in me is always looking for ways to improve, refine, and polish. How can we turn our mission at Salem into works of art, into masterpieces we can be proud of?
This calls for some critical examination. When we do that, it is not to belittle the efforts of those already involved or to minimize what is already taking place. I’m just always eager to see how we can take our ministry to a higher level. I invite all of us to get into that spirit: in our worship, or music, our youth program, our education, our visitation, our circles, our social ministry, our stewardship, our outreach, our church council. How can we make it better?
One thing glaring bit of rewriting that needs doing: targeting the young men and young families of this community. There’s a work of art there waiting to be created. One way to start is get the men’s group to shake off the summer scheduling obstacles and lift off the ground. Let’s meet at 6:30 Tuesday, Sept. 19 for an informal time of discussion on: What it would take to get young men involved in church.
And in whatever we do this year, let’s keep rewriting. It may not seem like a drag but remember: it’s far more exciting to create a masterpiece than to turn in an assignment.

Dear Members,
Thank you for donating quilts for the Bremwood Lutheran Children’s Home and our Beloit campus. These quilts are greatly appreciated. I hope you had an opportunity to tour the Breemwood campus along with attending the Synod Assembly earlier this month. The donated towel bundles collected at this Tri-Synodical Women’s Assembly are also greatly appreciated.
The children appreciated the comfort the quilts provide during their stay and after they leave. Upon arrival, each child selects a quilt to decorate his/her room and express their individual preferences and creativity. This helps them feel “at home” in a new environment! Your quilt will give each of them a constant reminder that others care about them and their future.
We thank you for your continued partnership as together we carry out LSI’s mission to “respond to the love of Jesus Christ through acts of service to all.” You are a blessing to those in need and we thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Kaye M. Englin

Joyce Anderson and Carolyn Biere attended the Tri-Synodical Convention, June 23-24, 2006 at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. The Gathering Theme was, “Act Boldly in Sisterhood.” The Gathering Scripture was Ruth 1:16b, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” The Gathering Hymn was “Signs and Wonders.”
The Friday, June 23 program included a choir rehearsal (Joy and Carolyn participated in the choir), hymn sing, opening worship with communion, business meetings and workshops and tours for all. A tour of Bremwood was offered and workshops included, “Tips and Tools for Leading Bible Study.” Lutheran World Relief: Joy to the World” and “Massae Girls Lutheran Secondary School.”
The Saturday, June 24 session included Bible studies by Bishop Hougen from the Southeastern IA synod and Danette Johns, assistant to Bishop Michael Last. The keynote speaker was Linda Post Bushkofsky, who is executive director of the Women of the ELCA. Churchwide Representative, Wand Scott Bledsoe was a delightful, inspirational speaker. She describes herself as a committed servant to God. One way she honors that commitment is by faithfully serving her sisters in Christ, Women of the ELCA. “Dear Children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18.
The gathering also included Dr. Steven Ulestad, Bishop of the Northeastern IA Synod. His ministry priorities include focusing congregations on mission, strengthening youth ministry and building ministry partnerships. What a joy it was to listen to Kris Meyer, a storyteller who combines stores with inspiration, offering a quick wit, warm spirit and lots of energy. Her stories grow out of folklore, human experiences that teach an understanding of life, and things conjured up in a vivid imagination.
Salem Lutheran congregation gave ten health kits, ten large quilts and five baby quilts to Bremwood Lutheran Services in Waverly.
The 20th Western Iowan Synodical Women’s Convention will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Humboldt, IA on June 23, 2007.
Quilting will began on September 4th at 1:30 P.M.
Salem Women of the ELCA will host the Cluster 13 meeting on Saturday, October 7, 2006.
